A Family Photo Session at their Beloved Eichler Home in Cupertino

When this family reached out to me and said they wanted their final days in their beloved Eichler home captured in a style similar to Dwell Magazine, I was beyond thrilled to take the assignment. Throughout my entire years in photography school, all I wanted to photograph was architecture and I dreamed of one day working for a magazine like Dwell or Architectural Digest. While I still love photographing architecture, what was missing for me were the personal stories and interactions with people that I have become such an integral part of my work. This photoshoot perfectly combines everything I love about photography— interesting lines, shapes, colors, and most importantly, a personal story. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do!

And in case you’re wondering what an Eichler Home is, it’s a group of 11,000 homes built by the architect, Joseph Eichler, that helped coined the style known as "California Modern.” The homes were built between the 1940s and 1970s in the San Francisco Bay Area and parts of southern California and “typically feature glass walls, post-and-beam construction, and open floorplans in a style indebted to Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe.” Even cooler than his modern, clean-lined design, Joseph Eichler had the vision to construct “inclusive and diverse planned communities, ideally featuring integrated parks and community centers. Eichler established a non-discrimination policy and offered homes for sale to anyone of any religion or race. In 1958, he resigned from the National Association of Home Builders when they refused to support a non-discrimination policy.” (Joseph Eichler - Wikipedia, 2021)
