Top Ten Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session
The secret to a stress-free family photo session is in the planning. It’s actually not that complicated and I’m here to help. With 10+ years of experience photographing families, I’ve learned some things that can make your photo session a fun, memorable experience that your family will cherish for years to come.
Follow my top ten tips, and we'll be sure to have a great time!
Make sure the kids are warm! This is the number one thing that causes kids to be cranky and complain. If they’re cold, they’re going to say it… and say it… and say it. San Francisco weather can quickly turn from pleasant to cold and windy, so I always advise parents to dress their kids in layers and bring extras, too!
Make sure bellies are full! Hungry kids = grumpy kids. Be sure to give them a solid meal or snack before the session, something that won’t make a mess or stain their clothes or mouths.
Lighten Up. This is meant to be a fun experience with your family. Some kids get overly excited, but let the small stuff slide and save disciplining for another time.
Show some love! No need to be shy. Give extra hugs, snuggles, and kisses!
Choose an easy location. Whether you want the beach, a field, the forest, etc… choose a place that won’t be difficult or cause stress. That means easy parking, not too crowded, and no need to hike a mile just to get there! It also needs to be safe for the kids- not too close to the streets, cliffs, or big waves (for beach sessions, I prefer the Bay).
Make the photo session the one and only big event of the day. The last thing you want is for you or your kids to be exhausted for the session. I highly recommend booking your session date when you don’t have any other big things going on that day, like birthday parties or sporting events. Keep your schedule light and you’ll be energized and ready to go for the session.
Wear what’s comfortable. People always ask me what they should wear. There’s really no right or wrong when it comes to the style, but you do need to be comfortable. You’ll have more confidence and will be able to focus on connecting with your family. The kids need to be comfortable too! This goes along with my number one tip, if they’re wearing itchy clothes or something constraining, we’re going to hear about it. A lot.
Plan an activity. It could be as simple as looking for ladybugs, playing Red Light, Green Light, reading a book together, or even sharing a fun memory that will entertain the kids. The idea is to bring the family together and draw out natural emotions.
Reward the kids. I’m not saying “bribe,” although that can work too. ;) Give them something to look forward to that’s part of the experience of the photo session. For example, a trip to the ice cream shop after the session.
Relax and go with the flow. Seriously, take a deep breath, and be present with your family. Everything will fall into place and I’ll capture beautiful images, no matter what.
