How to Prepare Your Home for Your Newborn Photo Shoot

As a lifestyle newborn photographer, I’m here to share some of my top tips on how to prepare your home for your newborn photo shoot.

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby! I'd love to capture these special moments for you in a natural home setting, where life is most comfortable for you. Home photo sessions are especially great for documenting the intimacy of life as a new family. As you're settling into life with a new baby, the last thing I want you to worry about is what your home looks like for your newborn photo session. It's my priority to capture natural, authentic portraits and moments without leaving the comforts of home or having to exert much effort--you've just had a baby after all!

I know from experience that all we need is one decent window to create beautiful images.

I've photographed babies and families in homes and apartments of all sizes—from tiny studio apartments to big modern homes with floor-to-ceiling windows. I know how to use the best available light and work angles that highlight what's most important: photos of your baby and family!

I often come to people’s homes sight unseen. When I arrive, I will walk around your home to see which room has the best natural light. I often shoot in bedrooms, nurseries, and the living room, and I've even used a kitchen!

Please don't feel like you have to re-decorate or clean the house before I arrive. I’m happy to move things, if necessary, and we can easily tidy up the area where we ultimately choose to photograph.

If you do have a few minutes to prepare your home, here are my top tips:

  • Have all blinds and curtains opened, allowing as much natural light in as possible.

  • De-clutter by stashing away a few things like toys, breast pumps, cups by the side of the bed, papers on the counter, tv remotes, etc...

  • Turn off all overhead lights and lamps. It may seem strange, but we don't want the tones from the natural light to mix or compete with any artificial light.

  • Make sure the temperature in the home is nice and warm to keep the baby feeling cozy.

  • Have some of your favorite relaxing music playing. See my playlist here: Songs to Play at Your Newborn Session
