Reasons to Book a Winter Photo Session

If you think you have to wait for warm weather to have a photoshoot, let me explain why you should reconsider. Winter happens to be my favorite time of year to photograph people outside.

I've had the pleasure of capturing countless memories for families throughout the year, and we’re so fortunate with our (mostly mild) weather in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sure, we have months with more appearances from Karl the Fog, and every so often we’ll have a rainy streak, but overall our weather is pretty good. While many families prefer to schedule their photo sessions during the Fall when we finally have some warm weather, there are actually some fantastic reasons why you should consider having a family photo session in the winter. Here are just a few:

Here are my top reasons for booking a Winter photo shoot.

  1. Flattering Light. The position of the sun causes the light in the winter to be much softer and more diffused, creating a natural and flattering effect in your photos. It’s basically nature’s filter! This means you will have that oh-so-pretty glow, and who doesn’t want that?

  2. Fewer Crowds. San Francisco has some really amazing can’t-miss places, but unfortunately, that means they’re often super crowded. Ever try going to Baker Beach on a warm day? It’s a nightmare! I won’t do sessions there on weekends anymore, because parking is too difficult, and we would be dodging other people left and right. It’s so not worth it! So for anyone who wants photos at iconic San Francisco locations, like Baker Beach, let’s book a Winter Session, and better yet, let’s go on a Wednesday! ;)

  3. Cozy Accessories. Have fun and bundle up with warm layers! This is a great opportunity to show off cozy textures in your wardrobe and add fun pops of color. Layer up with scarves, hats, or even a blanket to snuggle with your loved ones.

  4. Easier to Book Weekend Spots: Since winter is a less popular time of year for family photo sessions, it can be easier to book a weekend spot that works for your schedule. Every Summer and Fall, my weekend calendar books up. I will often still have weekday availability, but for many families with school-aged children and full-time jobs, that’s simply not an option. While I can’t guarantee that I’ll have weekend openings in the Winter months, I usually have one or two weekend dates a month that are still available.

  5. Sessions at home add a personal touch. If you’re not up for braving the outdoors, let’s move inside! I love photographing people in their homes. It’s a great way to capture your family’s story. The best part about taking photos in your own home is that there is no hassle with finding an outdoor location or having to drive all over town to find an interesting spot. We can just focus on creating beautiful images together!

The Fall is a beautiful time of year for photos but I highly recommend not shying away from the Winter months! We’ll bundle up, put on some rainboots, and have a blast creating beautiful family memories together!
