Top Tips for What to Wear for Your Family Portrait

Deciding what to wear for your photo session may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be!

Here are some simple tips to help get you started.

  1. Keep it Simple! Stay away from logos and more than 1 or 2 patterns.

  2. Don't match! Instead try coordinating with complementary color palettes and mix in neutrals. To simplify the process, start with one outfit that you know will be worn and work around that.

  3. Consider the location. You want your outfits to fit in with the surroundings rather than compete. For instance, If we’re going to be in a grassy area, don’t wear green!

  4. Consider the weather. I can't say it enough- SF is cold and windy (most of the time). Come prepared! If you hate the idea of bundling up in a bulky coat, layer with light knit sweaters and cardigans, blazers, a fun moto jacket, a classic trench, a warm wrap or scarf, or even a big blanket for the whole family!

  5. Wear what makes you feel like a million bucks. You'll be photographed from all angles, so choose an outfit that gives you confidence.

  6. Don't forget the shoes! You will be photographed head to toe, so make sure yours are looking good and are comfortable for walking.

  7. Ultimately, just do you! Wear what feels right for you and your family. This is about creating your memories, so choose clothing that will happily remind you of this time in your life.
