The Backup Bag | 12 Items To Pack For Your Photo Session
As a dedicated Bay Area photographer, I work with families all over the San Francisco Bay. You’ll often find me in redwood forests, hiking East Bay trails, getting my feet wet in Half Moon Bay, and climbing hills in San Francisco. Our stunning outdoor locations provide the perfect backdrop for family photos. But with kids involved, and our famously unpredictable weather, being ready for anything helps ensure a smooth and enjoyable photo session.
I follow the Scout’s motto, “ Be Prepared.” I’ll admit that I sometimes go a little overboard ( I’m a notorious over-packer), but my preparation has saved me countless times. Many of my family photo sessions take place in beautiful outdoor locations, like Baker Beach or on trails in the Presidio, where there are plenty of opportunities for the kids to get wet or muddy. At some point, one of the kids will inevitably want a snack, and our San Francisco weather can change in a flash from mild to freezing! Being prepared with a few items on hand can save the day and ensure we have a great session together. :)
Here is a list of helpful things to bring for both kids and adults… just in case. I suggest packing up these things in a backpack or durable tote that you won’t mind setting down on the ground.
Extra clothes / warm layers (someone says they’re cold at about 90% of my sessions): San Francisco's weather can shift rapidly. Bring along a variety of layers for each family member. Think light jackets, cozy sweaters, and even a change of clothes for the little ones. This isn't just about comfort; it's about having options for different looks in your photos.
Mess-free snacks: I like applesauce squeeze packs, string cheese, and granola bars. This can help keep the energy up and the smiles coming.
Water bottle: We’re pretty active, so you’ll want to stay hydrated!
Hairbrush, powder, and lipstick for touch-ups: It’s often windy, and a little touch-up will ensure you’re looking your best.
Sun Protection: On sunny days, don’t forget hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to keep everyone safe and comfortable.
Tissues: especially if you have toddlers!
Diapers/wipes: Just in case
Plastic bag: good for wet or dirty clothing or trash
Towel: something to sit on or to dry off after a beach session
Something to play with: bubbles, a ball, beach toys, etc…
Dog treats: if you’re bringing your pup, of course
A super special treat in case someone needs cheering up: like mini marshmallows, cookies, gummy bears, or dried fruit
